The following sections describe the most common error conditions with combinations of blinking lights displayed on the printer control panel, followed by solutions for each combination. Find the blinking light pattern that displays on the control panel, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.
Control panel buttons, icons, and lights (dn/dw/w models)
Callout | Description |

1 | Open lid light: Turns on when the scanner lid is open. |
2 | Wireless light: Indicates the status of the wireless connection. |
3 | Wireless button and light: Turns wireless capability on or off. |
4 | Attention light (USB printers only): Indicates an error. |

6 | Copy options button: Sets the number of copies to print. |
7 | Copy button and light: Starts a black-and-white copy job. Press and hold or press multiple times to increase the number of copies. Copying starts two seconds after the last button press. |
8 | ID copy button: Place a card or small-size document anywhere on the scanner glass to copy both sides onto the same page. |
9 | Information button and light: Prints an information page that contains the summary of printer settings and status. |
10 | Resume button and light: Resumes a job after a disruption (for example, after loading paper or clearing a jam), or indicates the printer is in a warning or error state. |
11 | Cancel button and light: Cancels a print job. |
12 | Power button and light: Turns the printer on or off. |

Control panel display icons

3 | Ethernet icon (Ethernet printers only): Indicates that the printer is connected to network through a wired connection. |
4 | Wireless icon (wireless printers only): Indicates that the printer is connected to a wireless network. |
5 | Number Counter: Displays an E and a number when the printer is in an error state or displays the number of copies during a copy job. |
6 | Number of copies icon: Displays the number of copies selected for printing. |
7 | Contrast icon: Displays the contrast setting. |
8 | Scale icon: Displays the scaling factor. |
Er (Error) codes
The number counter icon in the control panel displays Er followed by a 2-digit error code.
ER and 01
The input tray is empty.

Load paper into the input tray, and then press the Resume button to continue.
ER and 02
The toner access door is open.

Make sure the toner access door is completely closed.
ER and 03
The printer failed to pick a sheet of paper.

Reload paper into the input tray.

Press the Resume button to continue.
ER and 04
There is a paper jam in the input tray area or printer base.

Clear the jam.

Press the Resume button to continue.

ER and 05
There is a paper jam in the toner fusing area.

Clear the jam.

There is a paper jam in the output tray area.

ER and 08
The toner level is very low.

Refill toner.

ER and 20
A toner or imaging drum sensor error.

Turn off the printer.

Wait for 30 seconds, and then turn the printer on.
If the problem persists, Contact HP Customer Support.
ER and 23
The printer is running low on memory.

Press the Cancel button to cancel the current job.
-
Break the job into smaller jobs that contain fewer pages and resend. Avoid doing multiple tasks at a time such as scanning while printing.
ER and 26
The printer has experienced a general engine error.

Press the Resume button to continue.

If the error persists, turn the printer off, wait for 30 seconds, and then turn the printer on.
If the problem persists, Contact HP Customer Support.
ER and 30
There is an issue with the scanner.

Remove the protective sheet from the scanner glass, if not removed.

Turn the printer off, wait for 30 seconds, and then turn the printer on.
If the problem persists, Contact HP Customer Support.
ER and 31
An attempt is made to refill toner when a refill is not required.

Do not attempt to refill the toner unless the toner gauge indicator displays a low condition.
ER and 32
Imaging drum is near end of life cycle.

Continue printing. After print quality becomes unacceptable, replace the imaging drum.
To replace the imaging drum, Contact HP Customer Support.
ER and 41
There is paper jam in the document feeder.

Clear the jam.

Restart the job.

ER and 42
There is paper jam in the rear duplexer.

Clear the jam.

Press the Resume button to continue.

ER and 50, 51, 52, 54, 55, 58, or 59
The printer is in an error state due to an issue in the main engine.

Turn the printer off, wait for 30 seconds, and then turn it on.
If the problem persists, Contact HP Customer Support.
ER and 61
An error occurred during Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) and the printer failed to connect to the wireless network.

Press the Cancel button to continue or try to connect again.
ER and 66
The printer has failed to detect the wireless hardware.

Press the Resume button to continue without the wireless hardware or turn the printer off, wait for 30 seconds, and then turn the printer on.
If the problem persists, Contact HP Customer Support.
ER and 77
A secure device failure error.

Go and P codes
The number counter icon in the control panel displays Go or P followed by a 2-digit or 1-digit error code.
Go and 01 display, Attention light blinks, Resume light and Paper icon are on
The printer is in manual paper feed mode.

Load the correct paper type and size into the input tray.

Press the Resume button to continue.
Go and 02
The printer is processing a manual duplex job and requires the printed pages to be inserted into the input tray to complete the job.

Load the stack of paper with the printed side facing down and the top edge of the stack into the input tray.

Press the Resume button to continue.
Go and 03
The paper type or size loaded in the input tray is different from the paper type or size specified in the print job settings.

Load the correct paper size and type into the input tray, or change the paper settings in the printer software.

Press the Resume button to continue.
Go and 04
The printer has received a request for Google Cloud Print registration.

Press the Resume button to connect.
Go and 06 display, Information light blinks, Wi-Fi Direct icon is on
The printer has received a request to connect using Wi-Fi Direct.

Go and 99
It's a prompt to unlock hidden EWS service page.

Open EWS.

Click the HP Web Services tab.

In Web Services Settings, click Enable.
The EWS service page unlocks.
P and 2
The printer has completed the first side of an ID Card copy job and needs the card on the scanner turned over to complete the job.

Open the scanner lid, and then turn over the ID card.

Close the scanner lid.

Press the Resume button to continue.
Control panel lights
Control panel lights blink along with the icons on the display to indicate most common error conditions.
Wireless icon and light (dw)
The Wireless icon and the Wireless light on the control panel display work together to indicate the status of a wireless connection.

The Wireless icon and Wireless light are off: The printer is not connected to a wireless network. You do not need to take any action.

The Wireless icon is on and Wireless light is solid blue: The printer is connected to a wireless network. You do not need to take any action.

The Wireless icon and Wireless light blink in sync: The printer is trying to connect to a wireless network. You do not need to take any action.

The Wireless icon with error and Wireless light blink in sync: The printer is unable to connect to a wireless network. Press the Cancel button to continue, and then try to connect to the wireless network again.
Wireless icon (sdw)
The Wireless icon on the control panel indicates the status of a wireless connection.

The Wireless icon is off: The printer is not connected to a wireless network.

The Wireless icon is on: The printer is connected to a wireless network.

The Wireless icon cycles: The printer is trying to connect to a wireless network.

The Wireless icon with error cycles: The printer is unable to connect to a wireless network.
