Big tech and LeetCode have broken y'all's brains. Talking about the WordPress plugins you've built and shipped is a lot more interesting and relevant to me than how many difficult coding puzzles you have solved. And, arguably more relevant to the day-to-day work of a developer at a huge number of companies.

There is a thriving leet code industrial complex where folks are willing to spend a year honing their skills they will hardly ever use or use it improperly ( e.g. I spent a year learning how to paint, now everything looks like canvases).

Show me you’ve tracked down the right subject matter experts and translated 10 sets of vague requirements into actionable designs and bite-sized tickets. That’s way more impressive than memorizing tree traversal and sliding windows

But that's the default expectation. You learn more than you need, expecting to go out and only do the cool part of the job. What the people that pay you find cool and interesting is not what you'll find cool and interesting.Work will never be as fun as your hobbies. That's why it's called work. For the most part, no one cares how you get the job done. I did more with Access databases, powershell, and crystal reports than some people do with a $20M system. But hey, whatever floats your boat.

100% agree. In my opinion there's too much of a focus on those kinds of skills in developer interviews. I'm much more interested in hiring developers that have verifiable skills in the real world, a great fit in personality, and who are energetic and hard working.

If I was in the unfortunate position of needing a job ASAP as a software developer, the LinkedIn job board would be the very LAST place I spent my time and energy every day. I would spend no more than 10 minutes a day applying and treat it like a lottery ticket. Why? Because it's too easy. It's literally called Easy Apply. LinkedIn is THE professional network. Even people who hang out on Twitter and hate LinkedIn still come back and visit when they are looking for a job. I would want to tilt the odds as far in my favor as possible. And that isn't going to happen on the job board here.

That'll be a hard pass for me. If you don't have the time and humanity to be present enough to interview a future employee, I can't imagine how terrible the work culture is.Also, this will just encourage an AI candidate to show up to the interview. So now we will have algorithms interviewing each other for made up positions. Fantastic use of time and energy. Great progress we've made with technology.

I would pay for LinkedIn Premium if they focused their AI efforts on features like:"We have hidden the post below because we have detected that it is another horrible take from an out of touch founder." or "We don't think you should connect with this person based on how closely they match to others you have proactively blocked." or "This person actively participates in an engagement pod, so we went ahead and muted their profile."Instead we get 'Rewrite with AI'canned prefilled connection messagesand, 'Sorry, the scam you flagged in your DM isn't actually a scam even though they are asking for personal information via Whatsapp and are copy/paste exact matches like the previous 100 you have already reported. "

The most disappointing part of all of this isn't even that the original announcement video contained misdirection and FOMO. That's a given in the world of slick marketing and carefully cut demos. It's that so many tech influencers and journalists praised and amplified the announcement and are now walking back how 'even they were fooled'. This is what happens when hype and the race to announce first overshadows rational thinking and proper investigation by those who claim to be professionals.https://lnkd.in/gYuspZ7C

Netflix: here is the exact millisecond you stopped watching previously. Amazon: you stopped around here, give or take about 30 seconds. Hulu: we think you were watching this episode, but honestly we aren't confident. Here, watch an ad and hopefully you'll forget. Disney: sorry, the movie you downloaded just before this 4 hour flight won't play because we need an Internet connection to check to make sure you still have a subscription. Good luck!!YouTube: we tracked everything about your watch session but we aren't telling you any of it--start back at the beginning.

Personalized marketing emails and reengagement campaigns are so silly. I get it though; playing to human psychology can be effective. But, Stan from World Coolest T-Shirts, no one actually believes you sat down at 3 am and typed them an impassioned message about the latest flash sale.
